Yakhnich Motosport star finds new hobby in time off

Nadya Yakhnich, a well-known member of Russia’s Yakhnich Motosport team, kindly agreed to expand on the team news and her accident in Brno (the Czech Republic) in an interview with Motonews.ru.

What do the doctors say? How long will you be stuck wearing a plaster cast?
“I thought it was just a crack and planned to go to the European Championship. I came to Moscow, they took an X-ray and told me: ‘Okay, good bye now!’ It turned out that my ankle was broken. So my only option was to wear a plaster cast for a month and a half. I couldn’t even walk. And afterwards, two weeks to work out and rehabilitate my leg. My collar-bone is broken too. It happened a year ago at exactly the same place in Brno. Doctors had a plate put into it. So when I fell over this time I broke it again. I had to have another surgery and another plate implanted. And it will take my arm two months to rehabilitate.”

It is worth mentioning that Nadezhda quit the race last year after a phenomenal accident: her motorcycle exploded, with she herself somehow miraculously managing to crawl away, as if propelled by some mysterious force. After the accident, the bike was left on the track. Another racer actually ignored the yellow flags and ran over it. And though Nadya’s bike completely burned up, both riders survived.
“The race was on. I started the last lap, and I actually ‘overslept’ it. So I was accelerating to reach our men, but at some point I rode into gravel and fell down, along with my bike, which I left on the track. Then it just hit me that I needed to crawl away from the bike. Five minutes later, another rider ran into my undamaged bike. It exploded because he scratched my tank with his footpeg. That racer totally ignored yellow flags, which always means that there is danger ahead. Riders shouldn’t stop, but they have to at least slow down and ride carefully to be able to take any necessary measures.”

What do your coaches say about the team’s condition?
“Right now our Italian coaches tell us that we are not focusing on qualifying at the European Championship. We are focusing on fighting for points to be in the top ten, and gaining as much experience as possible. By the way, Natasha Lyubimova will be representing our team and the European Championship.”

What is your favorite circuit?
“I love Italy. Even after the recent fall in Brno, where the track wasn’t very good to me, I still think that it’s my favorite circuit.”

So, you seem to have a pretty calm fall, with no racing, right?
“Yes, I’ve actually already signed up for English and Italian language courses,” Nadezhda mentioned.

How would you characterize Nastya Loginova’s results at the 2008 Supermoto Championship of Russia?
"She fulfilled her task, defended the honor of our team, and now everybody knows the new Yakhnich Motosport star – Nastya Loginova.”

Do you have any plans to expand the Yakhnich Motosport team?
"Yes, we are looking for a strong and talented girl in motocross that would not mind switching to road-racing and participating in the Championship of Russia next year.

Do you watch MotoGP? Who is your favorite rider?
"I did watch it as much as possible. I’m not a fan of any rider or team. I’m a fan of any beautiful and highly technical race. I love to watch the way riders sit on a bike, what they do at the start, when passing, where their feet are… I do in some way want Colin Edwards to win. Because he is number five like me. I’m always asked who I’m supporting. And I say that I’m all for the beauty. Unfortunately, they never broadcast the struggle of low rank riders. But I know that there are always intrigues worth watching there.”

Motonews.ru wishes Nadya Yakhnich a quick recovery and speedy return to racing, as well as good luck to Natasha Lyubimova at the European tours.
