Double Delight as Yamaha Dominate in Qatar
|
12 comment(s)
Reigning MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo kicked off the defence of his title tonight in the best possible way, delivering a flawless ride under the floodlights of the Losail International Circuit to take a perfect victory in the Grand Prix of Qatar.
Lorenzo put the hammer down from pole position, taking the hole-shot into turn one and never looking back. He remained untouchable throughout, dispatching the 22 laps in isolation with trademark efficiency to claim his first victory of the season and add 25 Championship points to his 2013 title bid.
Valentino Rossi proved he still hasn’t lost his magic in tonight’s race, thrilling fans with a sensational run to claim second on the podium, completing a Yamaha Factory Racing one-two finish with his teammate Lorenzo. Rossi made sure his first race back with Yamaha was one to be remembered, having started from seventh on the grid he quickly moved up to fourth only to mistime a pass on Andrea Dovizioso and drop back to seventh again. By lap eight he was charging back up the field, closing down a gap of over three seconds to catch the podium battle and join the fight for Qatar honours. The nine-time World Champion dispatched fellow Yamaha rider Cal Crutchlow and Honda rival Dani Pedrosa before entering into a fantastic duel with MotoGP rookie Marc Marquez in the final laps for second place. Rossi emerged from the battle the victor, crossing the line in second position just under six seconds behind Lorenzo to take 20 Championship points.

Vadim Pritulyak on the Dakar Rally
|
3 comment(s)
Vadim Pritulyak, who has taken part in the Dakar Rally for a number of years now, has agreed to answer a few questions for Motonews.ru about the rally and give his predictions on Russia's chances of winning the prestigious motorcycle contest.
Did you follow the Dakar 2013 events? Who were you rooting for?
Sure, every day. I cheered for my friends from Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. I actually didn't even go to bed until the main group crossed finish at 6 a.m. In the car category, I supported Novitsky and Zhiltsov as his co-driver, since they had a chance to win a place on the podium.. And I cheered for everyone else to make it to the finish line! In the moto class, I supported those I know well personally: Gonçalves, Faria, Przygonski.

|
5 comment(s)
Doesn’t care at all about electronics, values traditions and simple clear forms, while good sound and comfort are right up his alley. That’s a pretty accurate description of a potential buyer of Harley Davidson Sportster Forty-Eight.
Harley-Davidson Sportster Forty-Eight is, in all respects, a motorcycle that helps build your image by highlighting your individuality and commitment to the classic look.

Boris Savitsky: Kawasaki sales close in on 1,500 in 2011
|
3 comment(s)
Boris Savitsky, the General Director of Fudzi Motors — an exclusive importer of Kawasaki motorcycles — has kindly agreed to fill Motonews.ru in on how the Japanese brand is doing in Russia.
How many Kawasaki motorcycles were sold last year, in 2011?
In 2011, Kawasaki sales closed in on the level of 1,500 bikes, which is, objectively speaking, an excellent result. It is particularly important that we reached the cherished goal – 25% of the road bike segment. That’s a new one for us. As for bikes for active recreation, quads, jet skis and motocross bikes, we’re on track to achieve significant progress in 2012.

Ilya Hait: Ural bikes yet to reach sales potential
|
4 comment(s)
General Director of Irbit Motorcycle Works (IMZ) Ilya Hait filled Motonews.ru in on where the producer of Russian Ural motorcycles currently stands.
Irbit Motorcycle Works has reported strong sales of Ural motorcycles in the United States. So, for the record, just how many motorcycles did you sell in the United States in 2011? And how many did you produce in 2011 in total?
In 2011, we sold 496 bikes in the States. In total, the plant produced 900 motorcycles in 2011, the bulk of them being sidecar motorcycles.
I expect to hear comments about the numbers being fairly modest, so I’d like to point out a few things right from the outset.
First, very few producers, even well-known brands, have so far managed to sell such a number of bikes in the U.S. Ural, for one, has outsold such famous motorcycles as Moto Guzzi and Aprilia.
Second, not only is the U.S. motorcycle market very competitive, it is also going through some rough times. Compared with peak sales, the market almost halved, and it has been at its low for the past two years. Against this gloomy backdrop, Ural sales climbed back almost to their pre-crisis levels, which didn’t pan out for many other producers.
Third, it’s also very important to bear in mind that Ural operates in a very narrow niche of sidecar motorcycles. The culture of sidecar motorcycles has been virtually extinct in western countries for decades now, and what Ural is doing is essentially restoring a whole segment of the motorcycle market. The task is extremely difficult, but we are dealing with it gradually, one step at a time.

|

Luigi Termignoni, the founder of the legendary brand of Termignoni exhaust systems, kindly agreed to answer some questions recently for Motonews.ru.
Founded in 1969, Termignoni designs and develops motorcycle exhaust systems. With the experience it has gained over its long history of operation, the company’s products demonstrate excellent performance results. Termignoni exhaust systems boast the ability to increase engine power, and their total weight is nothing compared to all other serial exhaust systems.
Termignoni exhaust systems have long since proven their worth at such races as MotoGP, Moto2 and SBK…

A tour of the Ducati plant...
|
2 comment(s)
Motonews.ru journalists took a trip to Bologna, where they visited a plant owned by the famous Italian Ducati brand and got a chance to talk with the plant’s management and even watch the conveyor belt process…
The trademark’s history isn't quite what you would expect it to be. It wasn't motorcycles or engines that were the first products to enjoy immediate acclaim and gain the trust of consumers. Instead, it was an array of radio components, typewriters and photo cameras that started the plant's history in the beginning of the 20th century. Only later, when the factory’s operation was already in full swing, did the three Ducati brothers introduce motorcycle equipment on the market as an addition to their main products. Who would have thought back then that 50 years later motorcycles would become the legendary trademark’s signature product!

Vladimir Chaikovsky: Demand for BMW bikes rising
|
8 comment(s)
Vladimir Chaikovsky, who is responsible for sales and marketing at BMW Motorrad Russia, has agreed to a question-and-answer session with Motonews.ru to fill us in on the latest developments in the BMW motorcycle business in Russia.
Vladimir, when we spoke in April 2010, you said that BMW planned to sell 600 motorcycles in Russia that year. Did you reach that target? And what are your expectations for this year? How many bikes did you sell, and how many are you planning to sell in 2011?
Artyom, it is a real pleasure for me to answer this question. We fulfilled our plans last year, and this year, it seems that the overall number of buyers of BMW motorcycles is much bigger than we imagined. Truth be told, we're already looking at a four-digit number. A few hundred motorcycles a year, after all, is an overly modest figure for a country as big as Russia.

Andrey Urzhumtsev finishes his motorcycle rally across Africa
Africa is an amazing continent full of mysteries and adventures. It harbors both equatorial, evergreen rainforests and the planet’s largest desert, the Sahara. When it's pouring in one part of the continent, the other part is consumed by everlasting drought. Yet, the weather is by far not the main obstacle in covering thousands of kilometers. It is vital that you pay close attention and fully grasp Africa’s mysterious culture in order to be comfortable on its territory.
Andrey Urzhumtsev, a Russian businessman who happens to be into unique motorcycle tours, ventured on a solo rally across Africa in September 2010. To carry him across the continent, Andrey chose the BMW GS 1200 Adventure rigged out with a built-in camera system that captured the entire historic event.

New BMW GT and GTL models in great demand but limited supply – for now
|
6 comment(s)
Sales and Marketing Manager for BMW Motorrad Russia Vladimir Chaikovsky filled motonews.ru in on a new generation of BMW Motorrad tourist motorcycles, GT and GTL, which are about to appear on the Russian market.
Ever since BMW Motorrad presented its experimental development, Concept 6, in the fall of 2009, bikers can’t seem to get the idea of an in-line six-cylinder engine out of their minds. BMW has been using unique in-line six-cylinder engines of its own development in its cars for over 70 years. The concern also plans to start manufacturing motorcycles with this type of engine, again, using its own technology.

Alexander Philimonov on Yamaha buyers in Russia
|
1 comment(s)
Head of market relations of Yamaha’s Russian representative office – Yamaha Motor CIS – Alexander Filimonov answered Motonews.ru’s questions about sales dynamics, the average Yamaha motorcycles customer, and brand policy…
How many Yamaha motorcycles are you selling in Russia?
Well, you can get the general market outlook by analyzing the imports statistics. It also includes information about Yamaha. The company does not publish its own sales data, however.
How does that compare to the previous years’ results? It’s no secret that the motor vehicles market shrank as a result of the unfortunate developments in the global economy, and Russia is certainly no exception.

Ilya Khait: We export over 95% of all Ural motorcycles
|
2 comment(s)
General Director of Irbit Motorworks Ilya Khait fills Motonews.ru in on the global expansion of Ural motorbikes, its dynamics, and the profile of an average buyer of Russian motorcycles.
How many motorcycles are you selling in Russia, and how many are exported?
Before the crisis, we produced roughly 1,000 bikes a year. Over 95 percent of all Ural motorbikes are actually exported. Our main markets include the United States (50 percent of total sales), the European Union, Canada, Japan, and Australia. Last year, we sold 17 motorcycles in Russia. This year, since we’re seeing more demand in Russia, we expect to sell more here.
We’re essentially selling motorcycle combinations, and 80 percent of the total is motorcycles with a driven sidecar wheel.
